A whole lot of holly, jolly happenings await those seeking some seasonal merriment in Philadelphia this week!
For starters, many major tree-lighting celebrations occur this week. The Visit Philadelphia Holiday Tree — a 50-foot-tall white fir glowing with more than 4,000 lights! — powers up at the tree-lighting celebration at City Hall, thousands of lights and a 30-foot live Christmas tree sparkle at Rittenhouse Square’s Holiday Park Lighting, and Blue Cross RiverRink Winterfest’s festive holiday tree-lighting shindig features a bunch of awesome performers.
The Pennsylvania Ballet returns to the grand stage on the Academy of Music this week to bring the enchanting story of The Nutcracker to life, while The Philly POPS also kick off their annual Spectacular Sounds of the Season performances with special guest vocalists Mandy Gonzalez and The Melodica Men.
And the holiday traditions and customs of diverse cultures are honored at the Penn Museum’s Holiday Celebrations Around the World program, as well as at Shofuso Japanese House and Garden’s annual Oshogatsu event ahead of the Japanese New Year.
Also on the docket: Parade of Lights at the Independence Seaport Museum, Deck the Alley on Elfreth’s Alley and the Firebird Festival in Phoenixville.
